Self Portrait

A couple nights ago I sat down on the floor with a lamp, some paper and a white colored pencil, I proceeded then to draw myself, the whole point of this assignment was to give us practice drawing faces as well as practicing our shading for the first time really. I thought I liked mine at first but having seen some other peoples I am starting not to like mine quite as much, no one elses shading is really as hard as mine. But I really did it how it looked when I drew it, the light was quite hard as compared to the rest of my face. I still think it turned out well, at least I hope thats what people think, I know my first couple tries with faces, I ended up with a Frankenstein and a box shaped head and I feel that this one has broken me of those things although perhaps I am wrong, either way, here it is my self portrait done using a hard light source. Unfortunately due to the image size constraints on this blog I could not get it full size but pretty close.

Pencil Box

A project just completed recently was a project to design a pencil box, our materials were matte board as well as glues and adhesives. Sounds funny I know but suprisingly previous projects have banned the use of glues and such. This project I really just wanted a simple box nothing really special, in fact the only real thing that I knew I really wanted was a window to view what pencils were where in the box because there is nothing more annoying than thinking you've grabbed your HB when in fact you grabbed a 3H pencil, alright maybe not the worst but it is a hassle. Many people have noted that my matte board is both black and white and I am here to say that, that was intentional. I felt having it be all black was a bit bad, where as with the white it gave the box and outline and really a sign that it existed in the world. The lid is a unique feature of it as well as I chose this area to be the only part of the box with a pattern. I felt that with all the other parts having the white outline the actual lid was a bit neglected so I added the pattern. You also will note that the lid has one stripe thinner than the others this too was intentional. I wanted the lines to get larger further down almost providing the user where the end of it was, while giving the lid a little detail that it really lacked. It has certainly come a long way from my first iteration where the top of the box was very unstable and was relatively with out details.

More people profiles

So we did some more people profiles and I guess these turned out alot better.. still missing somethings, like eyebrows.. oops.. but yea, I espeically like the one I did of Josie mostly because its the one that looks most human... I only got to draw one in class as I was going to the review on how to do the drawings at the time.

cheers!

A Place for an Egg

Our first physical project in our design classes was to prepare a place for an egg using only paper. That means no adhesives, to counter this problem I decided to use some Origami styles that I learned to do really for this project. My place for an egg evolved from a huge mess of many things into the simple black base that it is today. I'm very happy with how it turned out. As for what it celebrates I went with its asymmetrical shape that still appears round, which is why the all the pieces that point up are on some kind of axis with the egg.

STOP MOVING!!!!

So we had to start drawing people (insert scream here).. I hate hate hate, drawing people although looking at them as just shapes helped a great deal, although when people move as they often do it makes drawing them all the much harder..This was my first one, as you can see I have trouble getting the lengths of extremities correct. So my feet an legs look weird.. I really like how they layered effect kind of came into effect with this one.

This second one was drawn during studio, I noticed that it was kind of a good time to draw, again peoples arms and legs look disproportionate and incorrect but I'm still over all really satisfied with it.

This one I was in the lab and saw that their were quite a few people and I enjoyed the way the layers looked so I tried to get them. I also tried to throw in the desks and computers but mostly because they were showing the layers.

North Spencer

Sunday was all fine and dandy, I only had about an hour before I was supposed to be on duty again so I popped outside to draw. Sat down on a bench on College Avenue and started drawing the scene from the bench. I really like how this one looks, the only flaw I can tell is the bench where the angles got a bit messed up. Really do like this one though.. I loved that the trees and bushes around North Spencer give it so many layers with ultimately a little bit of the building visible. I diffidently intend to draw this place again, I want to add more details to the building maybe get some of the bikes on the bike rack into the scene as well.

Downtown Drawings

Saturday I went down town to draw some buildings for drawing class. Was just fine sitting down had just finished one drawing when my phone rings. Its my boss telling me I'm supposed to be in my residence hall on duty. This really caused some rain on my parade and I feel like my drawings show that. Especially the 4th one where I was just so frustrated by the fact that I didnt have much time to get back that I had to totally rush and it just looked awful. Not to mention its hard to draw cars. and Elm street, full of cars.. While I dont hate my sketches I know I can do better but I really just never got a good chance to trek back downtown to do some. Hopefully I can find sometime soon.

Negative Space Bike

So, last thursday we all sat down in the lobby of the Studio and drew a bike that was sitting on a bench, it was upside down and we were supposed to do a negative space contour. I like mine just wish the wheels had turned out better but I think I messed them up because I was beginning to get annoyed because the person ahead of me kept leaning in my way every time I was trying to estimate a distance between something.

College Avenue

1st Drawing 4. 09.20072nd Drawing 5.09.2007
Another location on Tuesday was College Avenue, this drawing I did like at first but also noticed a few problems when I drew it. I liked that the view had alot of variation between buildings and foliage that made for interesting blending. Once we heard that we had to redraw one of these locations so I was naturally tempted to redraw College Avenue. I really do appreciate my second drawing more as I was able to incorporate some of the cars and such that were absent from the first as well as quickly trying to get some of the pedestrians whom were walking about in.

Science Building Sketches

On Tuesday our drawing class met and we chose to head out in to the outside world in search of things to draw. We ended up visiting a number of locations and just trying to draw the layers we saw. One of these locations was down near the Science building. This one really wasnt a favorite of mine simply because I messed up and did the back layers first and also tried incorporating a perspective that was not consistent. But practice makes perfect and I am beginning to see my drawing improving from the past.

Blind Contour

On the 28th of August for our final blind contour assignment we had to draw our hand for 30 minutes, not only that but also on a larger scale than most of our other drawings had been to this point. This is how my hand turned out after time was up.

Negative Space

On Thursday we discussed negative space in our drawing classes, kind of strange since I had also heard about in my art history class that had met literally just before. For our exercise that day we were instructed to draw different chairs and really anything that had an interesting pattern of negative space, also one of our 9 drawings had to have some sort of human element. Above are the 3 that I thought were good, as well as my human element piece. My human element piece could probably be a little bit better, in terms of choice that is. I would've liked to do a whole human being but everyone really cleared out following class so a hand is all I could really see easily. Maybe I'll find a human being some time this afternoon who can hold still long enough.
